The paper you choose changes how your print feels, how long it lasts and what it costs. This guide explains paper weight in gsm, finishes, colour and cost, using real examples from our Print Shop in Ogbomoso. It replaces an older version of this article that quoted paper weights in pounds, which printers in Nigeria do not use.

Paper weight (gsm) explained

Paper weight is measured in gsm, or grams per square metre. A higher number means a heavier, thicker, sturdier sheet. Wikipedia explains the idea of this measure is called grammage. The printers whose price lists we checked, such as Hazken in Lagos and CM360 Prints in Abuja, all quote paper in gsm, so look for gsm when you compare quotes.

Different printers sell different weights. Hazken lists business cards at 300gsm and 600gsm, and CM360 Prints lists 250, 300, 500, 600 and 900gsm. Our own business cards come in 500gsm, 750gsm and 1000gsm.

Which paper weight for which job?

Job	What to think about
Business cards	Heavier paper feels more serious and does not bend easily. We offer 500gsm as standard, with 750gsm and 1000gsm for a premium feel.
Flyers and handbills	These are handed out in bulk and often thrown away, so a lighter, cheaper paper is usually enough.
Brochures and programmes	Choose a heavier cover and lighter inside pages if people will keep them.
Receipt and invoice books	You choose between normal paper and carbonised (copy-making) paper, in A6, A5 or A4. Carbonised lets the customer keep a copy while you keep one.
Stickers	The material matters more than the weight. Our stickers are vinyl and die-cut.

Finish and texture

• Glossy: shiny and bright. Colours and photos look vivid, but fingerprints and glare show.
• Matte: soft and calm, easier to read under strong light, and a good choice for a professional look.
• Uncoated: plain paper that takes pen and ink well, useful for forms, receipts and anything you write on.
• Lamination: a protective film over the print that helps against smudges, moisture and everyday wear. Our business cards are laminated on both sides as standard.

Paper colour

Bright white paper makes colours look stronger. Off-white or cream paper gives a softer, more traditional feel. Coloured paper can look striking but changes how your printed colours look, so ask for a sample first. If colour accuracy matters, read why screen colours and printed colours differ.

Recycled paper

Recycled paper is made partly or wholly from used paper and is a good choice if you want to show you care about the environment. It is available in different weights and finishes, though the choice is smaller than for standard paper. Ask your printer what recycled options they can supply and at what price.

How paper choice changes the cost
