When you resize image for stickers, you can go to almost any size, as long as you keep the proportions. A design made as a perfect circle can become a 1 x 1, 2 x 2, 2.5 x 2.5 or 3 x 3 inch round label, and a square design can become any square size. The trouble starts only when the shape is stretched or squashed.

This guide explains how to resize artwork safely, what causes distortion, how sharp an image needs to be, and how to send the file so we can resize it for you. If a size would distort your design, you should expect to be told before printing.

Resize image for stickers: keeping proportions so labels print sharp and undistorted

Design first, then resize image for stickers later

When you use AI to design a label, you tell it the shape: a perfect circle, a vertical oval, a horizontal oval or a square. The AI designs to that shape. The exact size in inches is decided later, when the artwork is prepared for printing. That is the moment to resize image for stickers, to the size that fits your container. See AI prompts for sticker logos and how to measure a container for a sticker.

How to resize an image for stickers without distortion

  1. Keep the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio (aspect ratio) is the relationship between width and height. A circle has a ratio of 1:1, so a circle resized to 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 inches stays a circle.
  2. Resize both sides together. Never pull only the width or only the height. In most tools, hold the shift key or turn on “lock aspect ratio”.
  3. Match the ratio to the label. A round label needs a 1:1 image. An oval needs a taller or wider image, in the same proportions as the finished oval. If the ratios do not match, the design will be stretched.
  4. Crop rather than stretch. If the image does not fit, trim the empty background instead of squeezing the artwork.
  5. Check the result. Look at the design after resizing. Do circles still look round? Does text look normal?

Examples: resize image for stickers proportionally

Original shapeCan be resized toStays the same
Perfect circle (1:1)1 x 1, 2 x 2, 2.5 x 2.5, 3 x 3 inchesA circle
Square (1:1)Any square sizeA square
Vertical ovalAny size in the same proportionsA vertical oval
Horizontal ovalAny size in the same proportionsA horizontal oval
Rectangle 3:23 x 2, 6 x 4, 4.5 x 3 inchesA 3:2 rectangle

The ratio is what must stay the same.

What causes distortion when you resize image for stickers?

  • Resizing one side only, so circles become ovals and text becomes fat or thin.
  • Forcing a design into a different ratio, for example fitting a square design into a wide label.
  • Using a screenshot with borders that are then cropped unevenly.

If a size you request would cause distortion, expect to be told before printing, along with options such as changing the label shape, adjusting the layout or choosing a size with the right ratio. You should never have to accept a stretched design.

Is the image sharp enough to resize for stickers?

A larger sticker needs a larger image. A good target is about 300 pixels for every inch of the finished size (this is called image resolution). If you use an AI tool, download the largest version it offers. Resizing a small image up does not add detail, so a small file stretched to a large label will look soft.

Sticker size (inches)Smallest image to use (pixels)
2 x 2600 x 600
2.5 x 2.5750 x 750
3 x 3900 x 900
3 x 2900 x 600
4 x 31200 x 900
6 x 41800 x 1200

Pixels equal inches multiplied by 300. Bigger is fine; smaller will print soft.

Use vector files for logos

A vector file, such as an SVG or a PDF with vector artwork, can be resized to any size without losing sharpness. If your design tool can export a vector version of your logo, send that. For photo-style images, use the largest version you have.

How to send the file

  • Send a PDF or a high-quality PNG, as a document on WhatsApp so it is not compressed.
  • Tell us the shape and the size you want, and the unit you used, centimetres or inches.
  • If you are unsure of the size, measure your container first. See how to measure a container for a sticker.

Can I resize a round design to any size?

Yes, as long as you keep the proportions. A perfect circle can be resized to any round size without changing shape.

What is distortion?

Distortion is when a design is stretched or squashed so shapes and letters look wrong, for example a circle that looks like an oval.

What if my design is the wrong ratio for the label?

We tell you before printing and suggest options, such as adjusting the layout, changing the shape or choosing a size with the right ratio.

How big should the image be for a 3 inch sticker?

About 900 by 900 pixels or more, at 300 pixels per inch.

Can I send a screenshot?

It is better to send the original file. A screenshot is often too small and may have borders.

Want us to check your file?

Send your artwork as a document on WhatsApp with the shape, size and quantity, and we will tell you if it needs adjusting.
